So Much Fun

Today was just SO MUCH FUN at Camp Highlander. After a much appreciated late wake-up for our sleep in Saturday, campers and staff were so excited to see yummy Krispy Kreme donuts awaiting them in the dining hall for breakfast. From the screams that echoed throughout the mountian, you would have thought these kids had never had a donut before. They were SO excited! It’s the little things at camp that are such a big deal!

Camper’s Choice was really exciting today with added off-camp trips including a horse show in Asheville, a waterall hike and tubing down the Mills River! Campers enjoyed our traditional camper’s choice activities and some chose to work on their progressive skills in an activity area as they pursue their Master of the Mills.

Saturdays are special for many reasons at camp…sleeping in, donuts for breakfast, camper’s choice and the biggest EP of the session. Tonight we had Country Fair! It was fantastic. The Gillespie Gymnasium was transformed into a down-home country festival. The activity counselors were responsible for setting up booths with games, food and prizes. Session A campers look forward to this EP every year. They come decked out in their western wear, cowboy boots, hats, bandanas and denim.

As the gym doors flew open at eight, we were lured in by the sweet smells of cotton candy, freshly popped pocorn, fried oreos and more. With tickets in hand, every camper raced in to enjoy the fun games and some tasty treats. There was a tractor pull, a shooting range, grandma’s front porch, a fruit stand, quilt making, bull riding, calf roping, ring toss and more. It was just SO MUCH FUN!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Special Events: Today was sleep in Saturday. Campers and staff enjoyed a late wake-up and Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast.
  • Meals: Breakfast was Krispy Kreme donuts, bacon, egss and fresh fruit bar. Lunch was walking tacos (bag of fritos, tacao meat, lettuce, tomato & cheese), homemade guacamole, queso and salad bar. Dinner was bbq pulled pork, smoked chikcen, mac and cheese, baked beans, hushpuppies and salad bar.
  • EP: Country Fair!
  • Weather: We had bookends of sunshine today. The day started out sunny and beautiful. We had a brief afernoon shower and then the sun came out to finish the day!

Melissa joined the Highlander family in 2002 and has served in a variety of roles, most recently becoming camp director in 2016 and camp owner in 2019. She lives on camp year-round with her husband (and fellow camp director/owner) Bryan, their rambunctious children - Charlie, Carter and Catherine - and their beloved family dogs, Roux & Lovey.
